The 2015 Cape Elizabeth 9/10 SB All-Stars fell short in their quest to defend the District 6 and State championships at Pine Street Field in South Portland today. For the second time in three nights, the neighbor rivals battled into extra innings, and once again South Portland prevailed - this time, 5-2 in 7 innings. South Portland earned the right to travel to Ellsworth next weekend and attempt to keep the state championship in District 6.
Cape finished 3-2 in the district tournament and their was no lack of drama. Three of the games went into extra innings, including the championship finale. To the last out, the girls were all about team and supported each other positively. Gracious in defeat, they sincerely wished South Portland great success in the state tournament.
These fabulous girls worked and developed together for four weeks after the 2015 regular season and proved a formidable opponent in local play. Nine of the girls played for the second year in-a-row on 9/10 all-stars, logging a record 19 post-season games to their credit. The 2014 edition claimed a district title and a state championship, and competed in the 2014 Eastern Regional Invitational in Pennsylvania. The team played in the district 6 championship game both years. Graduating to 11-12 SB now will be: Abigail, Analise, Clara, Dana, Esme, Hannah, Kat, Katharine, and Kathryne. Congratulations to these girls on an amazing two-year run!
New and important additions to the 2015 team were: Emma, Lydia, and Meghan. Cape looks forward these three taking on veteran leadership roles on the 2016 team!
The coaches and players would like to thank Kelly Gordon - team administrator and league director extraordinaire, for her many efforts, as well as practice field assistant coaches Dave Clay and Aaron Scifres for tireless logging countless hours of practice time with the girls while yielding the game day dugout duties to coaches Don Song, Mark Parker, and Manager Jeffrey Schwartz.
And finally, we thank all of the parents for supporting the girls through this run and cheering us on in the tourney - none of it happens without you!
Have a dream, make a plan, do the work. Go Cape!
