The Yankees and Cubs squared off yesterday at Plaisted Park in a well played Majors championship game which saw the Yankees come out on top 6-2.
The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in their half of the first inning with Matt, who had gotten on with one of his three hits for the day, scoring from third on a ground ball out. John made a nice catch in the inning in center field on a line drive by David, and Ryan hopped around behind the plate blocking many balls to help keep the Cubs in check. And in their half of the first inning, the Yankees came out swinging with Alec hitting the first pitch to left for a double and Brendan hitting a bomb into the trees in left for his first of three home runs in the game.
After a quiet second inning which saw some very strong fielding, in particular a nice play by the Cubs by Andrew at second base on a well hit ball by Sam, the Cubs came back in their half of the third inning to tie the game at 2-2 with Matt again coming around from third on a ground ball out. But Brendan fielded his position at pitcher well and ended the inning with two consecutive plays to first.
In the bottom half of the third, the Yankees used the same formula for their runs as in the first inning, with Alec getting on with a fielders choice after Natty's base on balls, and Brendan hitting a sharp line drive to left for his second homer of the game.
Yankees starting pitcher Brendan kept the Cubs in check in the fourth and fifth inning, and in the fifth the Yankees came out looking for a couple of insurance runs in their half of the inning. Cullen started things off with a rip down the first base line for a triple, and scored on Alec's second hit of the game. After John's line drive up the middle was snagged by Aiden, the front end of a nifty double play, Brendan closed out the scoring with his third home run of the game, a towering shot to right that hit the top of the fence, ending a three for three, three home run, three runs scored, and five RBI day.
In the top half of the 6th, Jake made a clutch play in right on a well hit ball by Aiden, which would be the last batter Brendan faced due to pitch count restrictions. But Chris came in as he had done so many times during the season and closed things out. After Jack started the Cubs rally on a double to left, Henry made a nice play at second with Ben receiving and squeezing the throw at first to end the game.
Congratulations to the Yankees, 2012 CELL Majors Champions, and to all of the Majors teams for a great season! Good luck in the post-season tournament!
