The dream summer continues. The District 6 champion Cape Elizabeth 9/10 SB All Stars added another title to their summer resume today - state champions! On a hot, cloudless afternoon at John Foster Field in Waldoboro, Maine, Cape battled from behind to defeat the scrappy District 1 champion Ellsworth, 4-2, in a semifinal. Then, in the evening tournament final against an equally game District 5 champion South Lewiston, the Capers pulled away late to a 9-1 victory, claiming the state crown in the process.

With South Lewiston waiting in the wings after their mid-day semifinal conquest of Biddeford, Cape once again drew the visitors straw against Ellsworth. Cape loaded the bases but left the runners stranded in the opening frame. After yielding single runs in the first two home halves, Cape faced a 2-0 deficit entering the third. However, a walk to Esme and a RBI double by Anna allowed the Capers to break through. Still trailing by a run in the fourth, Haley and Dana drew two out walks. With Hannah pinch running, a single by Abbey brought both runs home and put Cape in the lead. In the fifth, alert base running at 3rd by Analise drew an errant throw from the catcher allowing Cape slight breathing room at 4-2. Meanwhile, Anna and the defense settled down after some walks and high pitch counts in the early innings. Fine field work was displayed on the right side by Dana and Abbey, and Anna eventually registered 14 K's, striking out the side in order in the 6th to seal Cape's date with South Lewiston.

Cape had a very short respite between games in the hot summer sun, and more than a few supporters wondered what they had left in the tank after the tense afternoon game with Ellsworth. Once again playing visitors, Cape players quickly put such concerns to rest. Batting through the order in the top of the first. the Capers plated three on RBIs by Anna, Clara, and Cadillac. Staked to the three run lead, Anna once again went to work. She, too, had a few doubters, as she had not ever before been called upon to toss 12 innings in a day, and there were a few nervous glances as she walked the bases loaded to begin the home half of the first. As usual, though, she was merely setting up the challenge she likes best, as she calmly proceeded to strike out the side. The Capers would not score again until the 5th, but Anna and the steady defense held the opponents scoreless. Key plays included a caught stealing at second from K-Mart to Esme and an acrobatic catch by Abbey on a pop fly over first base. Cape took a 4-0 lead in the 5th on a RBI by Dana, and then broke the game open with 5 runs in the 6th, mostly on walks and passed balls. Anna briefly allowed it to be interesting for South Lewiston in the bottom of the final frame, as three consecutive batters fought through two-out, two-strike counts to reach base, one scoring. However, it was too little, too late, as Anna got the final batter swinging - her 13th strikeout of the contest and 27th of the day. Other big contributors, Abigail, Kat, Helena and their teammates, coaches and parents celebrated on the Foster Field diamond as Cape Elizabeth became the new state champion!

Players proudly received state championship medals in a brief post-game ceremony and had their pictures taken with the state championship banner. Cape went 4-0 in the state tournament, beating their opponents by a combined score of 48-11. The team is 10-1 in District and State play. Anna's pitching performance has continued to astound observers. She pitched 19 innings in state tournament play, striking out 46 batters, and bringing her all star totals to 57 innings  and 137 K's, respectively. She has been backed by explosive offense and timely defense. Consequently, the team is now invited to the final act - the 9/10 SB Eastern Regional Tournament, commencing August 2. Cape will represent Maine in the New England pool group.  One team, FINAL goal!
